March 2007

Greetings...

Ah! Warm weather! I'm pretending it's spring, even though logic tells me it can't last!

And speaking of spring...
Is your computer ready for the early daylight savings time change? If not, read on for help.

Also along the lines of spring cleaning,
what has your website done for you lately? If you're feeling unsure, frustrated, or just plain blah about your website, come to the next Website Workshop for Non-Techies, coming up in April. If you're interested, contact us as soon as possible to reserve your seat!

Don't forget to
send in your tech questions and restaurant recommendations in before March 31! That's when we'll draw for this quarter's winners of the new Tech Tips for Non-Techies 2 book.

Happy "Spring"!

Tech Tip:

Just in Time!

With this year's change in daylight saving time, you may need to take special measures to keep your computer clock in synch with the current time. If you have Windows XP, service pack 2 on your computer,
and if your automatic updates are turned on, Microsoft says you "should" be OK. That said, I'd be inclined to double-check your computer time, both on Sunday, March 11th, and again on Sunday, April 1 (when the original daylight savings would kick in).

If you don't meet the above conditions, or if your time seems wonky, here's what you can do:

  • On Sunday, March 11th, right-click on the system time (displayed in the bottom right corner of your screen).
  • From the popup menu, select Adjust Date and Time.
  • On the Time Zone tab, uncheck the box beside Automatically Adjust Clock for Daylight Savings changes. Click Apply.
  • On the Date and Time tab, reset the time, then click Apply, and OK.

Remember, you'll have to manually reset your time again the fall.

Ask a Question and Win
Do you have tech questions? Every time you send in a question, your name will be entered to win a free copy of "Tech Tips for Non-Techies 2" (soon to be published). The next draw date is March 31/07.

Working with Computer Consultants

Many people feel frustrated and intimidated when they need to have a computer problem fixed. Here are some tips to help make the process as smooth as possible:

Like a lawyer or accountant, it's best to select a computer consultant before you need one! Take the time to find a computer consultant who makes you feel comfortable. Your consultant should not only be able to solve your problem efficiently, but also be willing and able to explain, in understandable terms, what went wrong, why it happened, and what you can do to avoid the same problem in the future.

Lunch Bag

We're always looking for great little places to have lunch or coffee! Here's my pick for March:

Kinjo Sushi and Grill - 7101 MacLeod Trail SW - (403) 255-8998

Anne Stone of
Women in a Home Office writes:

A converted Tim Horton's just south of Chinook Centre on the west side of MacLeod is the home of the best sushi I have tasted in Calgary since I came here almost 3 years ago. Peter Kinjo, the owner, is often there at lunchtime giving out boxes of Pocky's and be careful, he is full of jokes and loves to talk/tease to the customers. Two can dine for under $30 and you will come out of there stuffed! Be sure to ask of the special sauce they serve with white rice...I eat more of the sauce than the rice.
