October 2007

Greetings...

Welcome to autumn! I was going to put on a witch hat and a green warty nose for the October photo, but I decided against it at the last minute. We all see enough scary stuff in our daily lives, and anyway, I was afraid somebody might compliment me on my new look!

Now that the weather's starting to get crisp and we're spending more time indoors, why not
create an electronic newsletter to promote your business (or your favourite hobby or passion)? I thoroughly enjoy creating this e-zine, and you can do it, too - it's fun and easy!

If you'd like to give it try, please read through this month's
article, or else try out our E-zine Workshop - and let the creative juices flow. And speaking of creative juices, hope to see you at the Bright Ideas Zone on October 24th - we'll have a whole new bag of toys to play with!

P.S. Thanks for reading this newsletter!

If you enjoy the Bright Ideas newsletter, please forward it to to a friend - we appreciate it!

Tech Tip:

Be Courteous When Sending Email to a List

If you send emails to a list of people, be courteous by hiding the recipients' addresses from each other. You do this by using the Bcc field, or else by doing an email mail merge (if you have Word 2003 or later). Either way, the recipient should only see their own address when they open the email.

The simplest way is to start your email as usual. If you have a Bcc field visible, you can click on the Bcc button to add names directly to the Bcc field. If it's not visible, click on the Cc button. (In Outlook Express, these buttons aren't apparent; just click on the text that says "Cc" with the little book icon beside it). When the address list opens, you'll see that you have the option to add names to a Bcc list instead of the To or Cc list.

Some spam filters reject emails if they don't have at least one To recipient, so add your own email address to the To list to avoid getting bounced.

Article:

What's an E-Zine (And Why Should You Care)?

An e-zine (pronounced "ee-zeen") is an electronic newsletter or magazine. In its simplest form, it's just an email containing news, tips, promotional information, or updates. Why should you care? Well, that depends on whether you're a sender or a recipient.

If you're a recipient, you can subscribe to an e-zine on just about any topic under the sun. Whether you're looking for information on your pet iguana (no kidding, there is an iguana newsletter - check out www.iguana-news.com), gardening tips, sales and marketing information, or inspirational quotes, there's a newsletter for you. All you need to do is Google your topic along with the word "newsletter".

If you're a sender, an e-zine takes on a whole new aspect. Some senders issue a newsletter just for the joy of communicating with others who share their passion. Other senders, particularly businesses, use e-zines to promote their business and stay connected with their customers.

Lunch Bag

We're always looking for great little places to have lunch or coffee! Here's my pick for this month:

Chilis Texas Grill - Southcentre Mall - (403) 225-2150

Sue Impey of
By Design Desktop Publishing writes: "My restaurant recommendation is Chillis at South Centre Mall. They serve an awesome Thai chicken lettuce wrap."

Sounds delicious - and a little heat might be welcome now that the weather is cooling off!
