August 2008
Welcome to August

Bright Ideas is making great strides!  We've been working hard over the summer to develop new "bright ideas" for training, updates to our website and newsletter, and exciting new learning products.

Changes to this newsletter have been an ongoing process, but in September, you'll finally get to see the "final product".   We'll also be unveiling two very cool new products, so stay tuned in the fall!

In this issue, learn how to deal with all those digital photos you
took on your summer vacation, and, if you're thinking of a website, read the article for a "non-techies" explanation of how websites work.

Also, check the News section for my interview in The Limelight.  Hope you enjoy "the dog days" of August!

Tech Tip:  Rotate a Batch of Pictures
You've just come back from an incredible vacation, and you've taken hundreds of digital photos.  They're now downloaded onto your computer, but it's a tedious process to turn them all right-side up.  What now?

If you've got Windows XP or Vista, you can easily rotate a batch of pictures all at one time:
  • Navigate to the folder containing your pictures using Windows Explorer, or else click on the Start button, and then click on My Pictures.

  • If you can't see thumbnails of your pictures when you get to the correct folder, click on the View menu, and select Thumbnails.

  • Select all the pictures that need to be rotated the same way (for example, all the ones that need to be rotated 90 degrees clockwise).  Hint:  To select more than one picture, hold down the Ctrl key on your keyboard while you click on each picture in turn.

  • Right-click on one of the selected photos.

  • In the popup menu that appears, select Rotate Clockwise or Rotate Counterclockwise.  All your selected photos will be rotated 90 degrees.

  • Repeat as needed.

Article:  How Does a Website Work?
If you’re thinking about developing a website, you may be wondering where to start.  Although the technical process behind the scenes is quite complicated, the “big picture” is actually fairly straightforward.  Here’s an overview to get you started:

There is a difference between a website and a web page.  Although these terms are often used interchangeably, a website is actually composed of one or many web pages, pictures, and/or other files.

Lunch Bag:  We Recommend...
Spring Roll Chalet100-600 6 Avenue SW, Calgary, AB - (403) 269-1750

The Spring Roll Chalet is hidden away on the north side of the street, but it's worth looking for.  If you love Thai soups and salad rolls, this is the place for you.  They've got the best spicy peanut sauce ever!

Get there before 11:30, because the seats fill up fast and the lineup goes out the door, especially in the winter when a steaming bowl of soup is Nirvana.  Even if you arrive during the lunch rush, though, the line moves quickly, and it's worth the wait!

Photo of the Month:  "Freeloaders"
Did you ever see such beseeching faces?  These harbour seals have their  begging routine down to a science.  They lurk outside a fish and chips shop beside the Victoria Harbour.  The fish shop sells tourists the raw fishy leftovers, and the seals put on their best "cute" act.  It worked on me...
