Since January 1, 2004, all businesses, including small
businesses and sole proprietors, must comply with legislation governing
the collection, use, retention and disclosure of personal information.
The Personal Information Privacy Act (PIPA) applies to all businesses
doing transactions within Alberta.
The Act doesn't
have to be a burden.
This common-sense seminar describes the principles of the Act and
offers easy-to-understand guidelines to compliance. It includes the
various methods of consent, how and when to seek them, and rules for
how and when you may (and must) disclose personal information.
Don't just cross
your fingers and hope for the best!
With a basic understanding of the Act and a few minor changes to your
systems, you can feel confident in dealing with personal information
privacy.
This seminar is also available
on CD, complete with audio, resources and links
Note: This seminar is not intended to
offer legal advice. Please note that the
information in this seminar is accurate as of March,
2008. Legislation and its interpretation frequently changes. If
you have questions about the application of PIPA to specific
situations
in your business, you are advised to consult a lawyer who specializes
in Privacy Act legislation.
